Events
As the state capital of California, Sacramento’s events calendar is fairly packed each year, and no matter when you visit the city, the chances are that you will find plenty going on to entertain you. From cultural events such as music festivals through to more raucous parades and fire works extravaganzas, Sacramento events offer something for everyone to enjoy during their visit to the city.
One of the most popular highlights of the calendar of Sacramento events is the annual Dixie Land Jazz festival. Every Memorial Day weekend, some of the best known jazz musicians from all over the world descend on Sacramento in order to perform their Bebop classics, and give the locals a taste of the music of the Deep South.
As far as national celebrations go, the highlight of the year is the Independence Day weekend close to July 4th, when the whole city is filled with parades, and evening fireworks displays are put on to entertain the crowds. There are a number of picnics and barbeques around the city that take place in the parks, and these are welcoming to everyone who comes to the city.
One of the best times to travel to Sacramento is during the fall. In early September, the wine making season is going at full pace, and traveling through the area surrounding the city is an experience that is filled with pleasure, and gives you the opportunity to see how the wine making process works, from the harvesting of the grapes through to the actual processing of the fruit into wine, you can get an understanding of all aspects of the procedures.
Although the weather in California is never particularly wintry, Christmas time in Sacramento is a great time to visit, and offers visitors the chance to get a taste for all the different kinds of Christmas food and decorations that you would expect at the seasonal time of the year.
Other major events in the Sacramento events calendar include the celebration of the founding of the city and discovery of Sacramento valley by the explorer Gabriel Moraga in 1808. The bicentenary of the discovery is to be celebrated in 2008, and will include many parties and parades that explore the story.
